100 Innovative Ideas To Make Sustainable Agriculture Work For Development

WASHINGTON, June 23, 2008 – The World Bank’s Development Marketplace today announced the selection of 100 innovative ideas to promote sustainable agriculture to compete for grant funding at the Marketplace to be held September 24-25 at the World Bank headquarters in Washington, D.C. This year’s global competition has been supported by the GEF and other partners.

2008 COM+ Alliance Award for Communicating the Food Crisis - Call for Nominations

In 2008, soaring food prices spread throughout the world, resulting in crisis in many developing countries. The 2008 COM+ Communication Award will be granted to a campaign related to the food price crisis. Issued by COM+  which includes the GEF, the award recognizes the role of communications in attaining sustainable development goals. The Award carries a prize of US$10,000 and will be presented at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Barcelona, Spain, in October 2008.

The Fédération Régionale des Groupements de Promotion Féminine (FRGPF) launched a campaign, with GEF SGP support, to train local women in more sustainable management and harvesting techniques, in response to the widespread destruction of mangroves due to unsustainable oyster farming in the Ziguinchor region.

Malawi’s Agriculture Sector Gets a Boost from the World Bank, Norway and GEF

WASHINGTON, June 24, 2008 – The World Bank Board today approved US$37.80 million to the Malawi Government to support investments aimed at improving food security and sustainable agricultural growth. The approved amount consists of a US$32 million International Development Association (IDA) credit, and a US$5.8 million Global Environment Facility (GEF) grant provided by the regional GEF investment program for sustainable land management linked to TerrAfrica.

More GEF projects aim at a common objective

UN agencies, shipping corporations to tackle environmental threats

LONDON, United Kingdom, March 2, 2009 - A Global Industry Alliance (GIA) was launched today at the Headquarters of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London, to tackle the threats of marine bio-invasions caused by the transfer of alien plants and animals in ships’ ballast tanks. Ballast water is carried in cargo ships to provide needed stability. It is taken onboard at the start of every trip an unladen ship makes and then pumped out on arrival.

During the 5th Meeting, the Board has been able to complete its deliberations on the operational policies and guidelines for parties to access resources from the Adaptation Fund.
