Bangladesh Hosts Climate Fund Meetings

A three-day meeting on the Least Developed Countries Fund to offset the adverse impacts of global climate change concluded April 6, 2006 in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
“The most vulnerable countries will be placed on more solid ground from which to achieve their sustainable development goals,” said Richard Hosier, GEF Climate Change Team Leader, addressing GEF support for adaptation at a press conference.

"I am pleased that all LDC countries have prepared National Adaptation Programs of Action (NAPA). I congratulate them because these action plans have helped to build mass awareness regarding climate change," said Tariqul Islam, Minister of Environment and Forest of Bangladesh, speaking at the inaugural ceremony.

The meeting's objectives were twofold:

  • Review arrangements that are being proposed to support projects identified in NAPA’s in the light of recent decisions of the Conference of Parties of the UNFCCC, and
  • Review NAPA outputs and to begin to prepare projects to address the most urgent and immediate adaptation needs of the Least Developed Countries
