Council Member Support Guidelines

Members and Alternates are appointed by participants in each constituency and serve for three year terms, unless the constituency decides otherwise. In most cases, constituencies have rotation agreements which help to determine when each country takes over the Council and Alternate seats.

Members and Alternates serve without any compensation, but the cost of Council meetings, including travel and subsistence of Council Members from developing countries, is covered by the GEF Secretariat’s administrative budget as necessary. Council Members are expected to share information on the Council discussion with Members of their constituency and also to bring feedback from their constituencies to the Council Meetings.

The GEF now provides Council Members with financial assistance to facilitate communication between the Council Member and constituency Members. Council Members can either hold constituency meetings at which they can share information, or disseminate reports and other information to constituency Members.
