Benchmark Ecosystem Assessment Wins Award

The 1,360 scientists from 95 countries, whose research contributed to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, were awarded the prestigious Zayed International Prize for the Environment (worth $300,000) for Scientific and Technological Achievement.

GEF Global Action on Biodiversity (Folder and Fact Sheets)
[Available online]

Released to coincide with the third meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, this series highlights GEF’s work on conservation and sustainable use of global biodiversity. The fact sheets cover such topics as protected area management, capacity building, and mainstreaming biodiversity into production landscapes. This series also highlights such vulnerable communities as small island developing states and indigenous peoples.

GEF Global Action on Sustainable Land Management (Folder and Fact Sheets)
[Available in print and online in English, French and Spanish, April 2006]

This updated series marks the International Year of Deserts and Desertification by highlighting GEF’s work to support sustainable land management, from the addition of land degradation as a focal area, to the designation of the GEF as a financial mechanism of the UNCCD. The fact sheets emphasize GEF’s commitment to promote sustainable land management as the most effective approach to prevent and control land degradation.

GEF Global Action on Persistent Organic Pollutants (Folder and Fact Sheets)
[Available in print and online in English, French and Spanish, April 2006]

This series highlights the GEF’s efforts to help developing countries combat persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and is being re-issued to coincide with the Second Meeting of the Conference of the Parties of the Stockholm Convention in Geneva, Switzerland in May 2006. The fact sheets address how the GEF is helping countries destroy dangerous pollutants and control termites without harmful chemicals, foster civil society participation, and develop national implementation plans. The series also features information on the Africa Stockpiles Programme.
