DECISION ADOPTED BY THE GOVERNING COUNCIL

OF THE UNITED NATIONS ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMME

AT ITS FOURTH SPECIAL SESSION

SS.IV.1. Adoption of the Instrument for the Establishment of the

Restructured Global Environment Facility

The Governing Council,

Having taken note of the agreement reached at the Global Environment Facility Participants' meeting held in Geneva from 14 to 16 March 1994 on the text of the Instrument for the Establishment of the Restructured Global Environment Facility,

Having studied the text of the Instrument transmitted to the Council by a note by the Executive Director a/ and, in particular, the description of the role of United Nations Environment Programme as set out in annex D, section II, paragraph 11 (b), of the Instrument,

1. Adopts the Instrument for the Establishment of the Restructured Global Environment Facility, as a basis for the participation of the United Nations Environment Programme as an implementing agency of the Global Environment Facility;

2. Requests the Executive Director to consider ways of enhancing the capacity of the United Nations Environment Programme to fulfil its role in the Global Environment Facility;

3. Further requests the Executive Director to include in the provisional agenda for the eighteenth regular session of the Council an item on the participation of the United Nations Environment Programme in the Global Environment Facility and to present a progress report to the Council thereon.
