Up to 7,000 delegates from around the world attended the twelfth session of the Conference of the Parties to the Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC) in Nairobi, Kenya from November 6 to 17, 2006. The conference was the first of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa and was being held in conjunction with the second meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol. GEF CEO and Chairperson Monique Barbut addressed the Joint High-level Segment of the COP 12 and COP/MOP 2 at its opening on November 15. Ms. Barbut spoke of the challenges in linking adaptation to development and reaffirmed GEF’s commitment to helping vulnerable countries adapt to climate change. The GEF also held a press conference and two side events on renewable energy and adaptation in Africa respectively. A new publication, Linking Adaptation to Development, was released to coincide with the COP, as well as two fact sheets on GEF’s work on adaptation, including the Least Developed Countries Fund, and the Special Climate Change Fund.
