VII. SGP and UNDP: An Update

GEF News from UNDP: An Update

From May 1-12, 2006, GEF’s Small Grants Program (SGP) participated actively in the 14th Session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-14) held at the United Nations in New York. The SGP participated within the framework of the UNDP Energy & Environment Group (EEG), and released a new publication, Expanding Modern Energy Services: Replicating, Scaling-Up and Mainstreaming at the Local Level, which was distributed at the UNDP Knowledge Expo. The report is an outcome of the Columbia University and EEG partnership involving three SGP countries: Dominican Republic, Kenya, and Nepal.

Recognizing the importance of community energy projects to sustainable development and to expanding energy services, SGP published a 2-page briefing note on the topic, which was widely distributed at the Expo.

The SGP was well-represented at CSD-14, and staff delivered five thematic presentations on (a) increasing energy services for the poor, (b) energy services and carbon finance, (c) regional government partnerships in financing renewable energy activities, (d) GEF activities in the Pacific Small Island Development States (SIDS), and (e) examples of productive end-uses within the GEF’s climate change thematic area. Presentations will soon be available for downloading at the SGP global workspace.

The article, “The GEF SGP Climate Change and Energy Activities in the SIDS,” was published in SIDS Outreach, which was jointly produced by the Global Forum for Oceans, Coasts and Islands and the Stakeholder Forum to mark the introduction of SIDS Day to the CSD agenda. The publication provides an overview of SGP’s climate change and energy activities.

With a view to focusing on the operational implications of the new Resource Allocation Framework on country programs, SGP organized two regional workshops in Agra, India (April 8-13, for the Asia-Pacific region) and in Damascus, Syria (May 28-June 2, for the Arab States region). The workshops also discussed GEF replenishment and graduation concerns.
