IV. Report on Events: IYDD

Expert Forum and High-Level Roundtable on Sustainable Land Management
August 28, 2006, Arabella Sheraton Hotel, Cape Town, South Africa

The United Nations has designated 2006 as the International Year of Deserts and Desertification (IYDD). In order to focus global attention on this pervasive problem, the GEF is hosting an expert forum and high-level roundtable on sustainable land management to raise awareness at the country level. This event, is scheduled to be held prior to the GEF Assembly (August 29-30, 2006).

Land degradation is the GEF’s newest focal area, and participants—from public, private, business and voluntary sectors—will discuss the challenges and new opportunities to enhance the impacts of sustainable land management interventions, and their role in protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development. The program includes following:

Three technical symposia:

Best practices in integrated land and water management

Knowledge management and indicators

Mobilizing resources and strengthening partnerships

A high-level roundtable in the afternoon:

• Ministerial statements

• Presentations by leading scientists on cutting-edge issues relating to land degradation

• Participation of leaders from public and private sectors and civil society

The format allows for dialogue, and a declaration resulting from the forum will be shared with the GEF Assembly.
