Third GEF Assembly: An Update
The Third GEF Assembly hosted by the Government of South Africa will be held
at the “Mother City,” Cape Town, during August 29-30, 2006. The
venue is the state-of-the-art Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC,
www.capetownconvention.com/ )
This is the first GEF Assembly to be held on the African continent, generating
an air of anticipation among GEF stakeholders. Highlights of the pre-Assembly
events include:
• Forum on “Sustainable
Land Management, Combating Environmental Degradation and Reviving Ecosystem
Productivity,” August 28, 0900–1830

• NGO
Forum “Turning Policy Into Reality: From the Ground Up,” August

• Special
Meeting of the GEF Council, August 28, 0930–1730,

The opening ceremony of the Third GEF Assembly will take place on August
29, beginning at 0900 hrs. Statements by Ministers, GEF constituencies,
and GEF
partners will be the highlights.
On Wednesday, August 30, three high-level roundtables with participation
by ministers and other heads of delegation will be held on topics
of contemporary significance:
• Climate
Change: Mitigation and Adaptation • Market
Mechanisms for Financing Global Environmental Conventions
• Identifying
National Priorities and Allocating Resources to Enhance Results and Impacts
at the
Country
Level
A series of side events and exhibits are planned for the Assembly,
providing participants with an excellent opportunity for raising
awareness about
the challenges of managing the global environment.
A series of site visits are planned for August 31 and September
1, 2006, where participants will be able to visit top-performing
environment
and
development-related projects. The site visits will feature
half- and full-day trips, providing
maximum flexibility and choices for participants.
